A Girl ~ Her Dog ~ And A Thing For Jewelry
I'm a girl named Sam and I've had a lifelong love affair with jewelry. Earrings, bracelets, necklaces, rings, brooches... oh my! Sparkly, shiny, dangly.....ooh la la!
I remember digging through my mom's jewelry box as a girl, layering on as many pieces as my little hands could manage. It was magical and mesmerizing, and I can still recall the unabashed joy those sparkly treasures provided. I fell early and I fell hard, and my affection for adornment took hold.
More than twenty years later, I found myself digging through another mezmerizing jewelry box - this time it belonged to my late great grandmother, Dorothy. Though I barely knew her, as the only daughter of her only granddaughter, her beautiful collection of costume jewelry was my inheritance. While layering on as many pieces as my now thirty-something hands could manage, I felt an instant and undeniable connection to this woman. Two dames, separated by generations and geography, now connected through the links of a vintage necklace chain.
It was then that I had my epiphany. Jewelry doesn't just make you sparkle on the outside - it can make you sparkle on the inside, too. Remnants of a special occassion. A token of your beloved's affections. A souvenir from exotic travels. An heirloom from your great grandmother... Jewelry can connect us to the past, evoking a sense of nostalgia that's simply nourishing to the soul.
When I opened the lid to my great grandmother's jewelry box back in early 2008, I found the inspiration to pursue my true passion. Named after my sweet doggy girl, who is my most treasured pearl, the first Talulah B. collection of revamped vintage jewelry featured pieces made using some of Dorothy's wonderful jewels. Two years later, Talulah B. continues to create unique, nostalgic jewelry and accessories that feature vintage materials and found objects. Together, Talulah and I scour flea markets in our hometown of Atlanta, looking for trinkets, bit and baubles in need of new life. Back in our little pink house in Cabbagetown, as we ponder these treasures of the past, we look to the future...with unabashed joy.
